Introduction

The Prophet of Islam Hazrat Muhammad (SM) has left the most significant influence in the history of mankind. He was the model of a great man. Muhammad (SM) united Arabia into a single Muslim polity, with the Quran, as well as his teachings and practices, forming the basis of Islamic religious belief.

Birth and Childhood

He was born in a traditional and aristocratic family in 570 A. D. His father died before his birth. It was the tradition of then aristocratic Arab families to get their babies lactated by foster mothers. Hence Hazrat Muhammad (SM.) was also lactated by a foster mother named Halima.

He lost his mother when he was only six years old. Then he was raised by his grandfather Abdul Muttalib. His grandfather also died when he was only eight years old. Then his uncle Abu Talib took the responsibility of raising him. He did not get an opportunity to get a formal education and was illiterate.

The little boy kept himself busy herding sheep in the field and doing housework. His school was the open sky and the desert landscape and mountains where he worked. Abu Taleb brought the Prophet (Sm) on a business trip to Syria when he was twelve years old. The Prophet began his business career at the age of twenty, as was his family’s norm. From a very early age, everybody liked him for his honesty, truthfulness and praiseworthy behavior.

Marriage

At the age of 25 Hazrat Muhammad (SM) married a wealthy widow of Mecca name Khadijah who is said to have been about 40 years old. The marriage resulted in two (or three) sons, Qasim and Tahir (Tahir was also called Abdullah) and four daughters [Zaynab (R), Ruqayya (R), Umme Kulthum (R), and Fatima (R)]. Khadija (R) was the mother of all of the Prophet’s children except his third son Ibrahim (R), who was born to Maria Kibtia. However, all the male children died in their childhood. The Prophet did not remarry till Khadija’s (R) death at the age of sixty-five.

Prophetic call and early religious activity

At the age of 40, in about 610 A.D. He first received revelation from the Almighty Allah and attained prophethood. He began to preach the religion of Islam, at first secretly and later openly, He, along with his followers, went through a lot of opposition, torture and trouble. As the intensity of opposition began to increase, at one point in 622 A.D. he had to leave Mecca and emigrate to Medina.

The Islamic Era (AH or Anno Hegirae) begins on the first day of the Arabic year in which the hijrah or immigration took place on July 16, 622, in the Western calendar. He united the clans of Medinah and established a welfare state there. His followers began to increase. There he had to defend Medinah against some wars propagated by the Meccans.

Conquer of Mecca

In January 630 he led a force of 10,000 soldiers and attacked Mecca. Abu Sufyan and other leading Meccans went out to meet him and formally submitted and Muhammad (SM) promised a general amnesty (1475 ). When he entered Mecca there was virtually no resistance. Two Muslims and 28 of the enemy were killed. A score of persons was specifically excluded from the amnesty, but some were later pardoned. Thus Muhammad (SM), who had left Mecca as a persecuted prophet, not merely entered it again in triumph but also gained the allegiance of most of the Meccans. Though he did not insist on their becoming Muslims, many people of Mecca Soon embraced Islam.

At thousand of his farewell Address on the plain of Arafat was revealed the last wahi. ‘This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion (5:3)

Death

Muhammad (SM) became ill a few months after his farewell pilgrimage, suffering from fever, headaches, and weakness for several days. He died at the age of 62 or 63 in the residence of his wife Aisha in Medina on Monday, June 8, 632. Muhammad was laid to rest in Aisha’s home, where he had died.
