বার আগে আসুন জেনে নেই প্রবাদ বাক্য (Proverb) কি ?  মানবসমাজের প্রচলিত দীর্ঘদিনের জীবনসত্যের কোন সংক্ষিপ্ত উক্তিকে  প্রবাদ। প্রতিটি ভাষার অমূল্য সম্পদ হল প্রবাদ বাক্য বা প্রবাদ প্রবচন। প্রবাদ প্রবচন একটি ধারা হিসেবে  বাঙালীর হাজার বছরের সংস্কৃতির সাথে মিশে আছে।

প্রবাদ প্রবচনের বৈশিষ্ট্য ঃ
বাঙালীর ছোট ছোট প্রবাদ প্রবচনে এর কিছু বৈশিষ্ট্য লক্ষ্য করা যায়। যেমন

  • তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ ঃ বাঙালীর প্রবাদ প্রবচনের অর্থ অনেক গভীর ও তাৎপর্যময়। মূলত এর রুপক অর্থই পাঠককে সাহজে মুগ্ধ করে।
  • সহজ প্রকাশভঙ্গি ঃ প্রবাদ প্রবচনে মাধুর্য হল এর সহজ সরল প্রকাশভঙ্গি। আর এর কারণেই তা সহজে পাঠকের মনে সারা জাগাতে পারে। ছন্দ ও অন্ত্যমিলের জন্য পাঠক সহজেই তা মনে রাখতে পারে।
বাংলা প্রবাদ বাক্য (পর্ব ১): অর্থসহ ইংরেজি প্রবাদ বাক্য
১। অসময়ের বন্ধুই প্রকৃত বন্ধু – A friend in need is a friend in deed.
২। ভাত ছড়ালে কাকের অভাব হয় না – A full purse never lacks friends.
৩। টাকায় বাঘের দুধ মেলে – A golden key can open any door.
৪। স্বামী ভালো হলে স্ত্রীও ভালো হয় – A good husband makes a good wife.
৫। কারও সর্বনাশ, কারও পৌষমাস – What is sport to the cat is death to the rat.
৬। নামে কিবা আসে যায়? – What’s in a name.
৭। ভাগ্যকে পরিবর্তন করা যায় না – What must be, must be and what will be, will be.
৮। যেখানে যেমন, সেখানে তেমন – When in Rome, do as Romans do.
৯। এক দুয়ার বন্ধ তো হাজার দুয়ার খোলা। – When one door shuts, another opens.
১০। অভাব দেখা দিলে ভালবাসা জানালা দিয়ে পালায়। – When poverty comes in at the door, love flies out of the window.
১১। ইচ্ছা থাকিলেই উপায় হয় – Where there is a will, there is a way.
১২। পাকা লোক ফাঁকা কথায় ভোলে না – You cannot catch an old bird with chaff.
১৩। অধিক সন্ন্যাসীতে গাঁজন নষ্ট। – Too much cooks spoil the broth.
১৪। অতি ভক্তি চোরের লক্ষণ – Too much courtesy, too much craft.
১৫। অতি চালাকের গলায় দড়ি – Too much cunning overreaches itself.
১৬। অপদার্থ যেখান থেকে শুরু করে সেখানেই ফিরে আসে – A bad penny always turns up.
১৭। নাচতে না জানলে উঠোন বাঁকা – A bad workman quarrels with his tools.
১৮। যত গর্জে তত বর্ষে না – A barking dog never or seldom bites.
১৯। মাথা নেই তার মাথাব্যথা – A beggar cannot be a bankrupt.
২০। বিনা মেঘে বজ্রপাত – A bolt from the blue.
২১। তর্জনকারী বা ষন্ডা সব সময়ই কাপুরুষ – A bully is always a cow.
২২। ঘর-পোড়া গরু সিন্দুরে মেঘ দেখলে ভয় পায় – A burnt child dreads the fire or Once bitten, twice shy.
২৩. নেংটার নেই বাটপাড়ের ভয় – A beggar may sing before a pick-pocket.
একটা / যুদ্ধের শুরু ভালো মানে অর্ধেক বিজয়/ সুন্দর শুরু কোন কাজের অর্ধেক সাফল্য এনে দেয় – A good beginning is half the battle.

২৬. বোকার কাছে টাকা থাকে না – A fool and his money are soon parted.
২৭. যতক্ষণ শ্বাস, ততকক্ষণ আঁশ – A drawing man catches or clutches at a straw.
২৮. আপন গাঁয়ে কুকুর রাজা – A c**k is always bold on its own dunghill.
২৯. সোজা আঙ্গুলে ঘি ওঠে না – A cat in gloves catches no mice.
৩০। কই মাছের প্রাণ বড়ই শক্ত – A cat has nine lives.
৩১। ভাগাড়ে গরু মরে, শুকুনির টনক নড়ে – A hungry kite sees a dead horse afar.
৩২। খিদের জ্বালায় মাথা ঠিক থাকে না – A hungry fox is an angry fox.
৩৩। বিদুরের খুদ – A humble gift made by a poor man with a sincere heart.
৩৪। একাই একশো – A host in himself.
৩৫। পকেটে টাকা থাকলে মনও ভালো থাকে – A heavy purse makes a light heart.
৩৬। ঠাকুর ঘরে কে, আমি তো কলা খাইনি – A guilty mind is always suspicious.
৩৭। অনুতপ্ত হলে অভিযোগকারীর প্রয়োজন নেই – A guilty conscience needs no accuser.
৩৮। বাড়ন্তরা অনেক খায় – A growing youth has a wolf in his belly.
৩৯। সেয়ানে সেয়ানে কোলাকুলি – A Greek meeting a Greek.
৪০। প্রায় শেষ করা আর একেবারেই শুরু না করা একই কথা – A miss is as good as a mile.
৪১। নিজ বাড়ি নিজ ভুবন – A man’s home is his castle.
৪২। সঙ্গ দেখে লোক চেনা যায় – A man is known by the company he keeps.
৪৩। পাগলে কী না বলে, ছাগলে কী না খায় – A mad man and a animal have no difference.
৪৪। অল্পবিদ্যা ভয়ংকরী – A little learning is a dangerous thing.
৪৫। ট্যাক খালি তো মুখ কালি – A light purse is a heavy curse.
৪৬। আজ বাদশা কাল ফকির – A king today is a beggar tomorrow.
৪৭। নেবু কচলালে তেতো হয় – A jest driven hard, loses its point.
৪৮। লঘু পাপে গুরু দন্ড – A severe punishment for a venial offence.
৪৯। মনে বিষ, মুখে মধু – A serpent under the flower.
৫০। নেড়ে বেলতলা একবারই যায় / চুন খেয়ে গাল পোড়ে, দই দেখলে ভয় করে – A scalded dog fears cold water.
