Introduction
Dengue fever has recently (সম্প্রতি) become a matter of concern (উদ্বেগ) in Bangladesh as many people have died of this fever. Dengue fever is also called Breakbone Fever, or Dandy Fever. It is an acute (তীব্র). infectious and mosquito-borne hemorrhagic (রক্তক্ষরণজনিত) fever. Besides fever, the disease is characterized by extreme pain and stiffness (শক্ত হয়ে যাওয়া) of the joints. Dengue is caused by a virus and may occur in any part of the world where the carrier (বাহক) mosquitoes breed (বংশবিস্তার করে)
Areas of Prevalence
The potentially (সম্ভাব্য) fatal fever is prevalent (প্রচলিত) in parts of Asia, South and Central America, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and other nearby islands.
How It Spreads
The carrier of the fever in most endemic ( উপদ্রুপ) areas is the yellow-fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. The Asian tiger mosquito, A. albopictus, is another prominent (উল্লেখযোগ্য) carrier of the virus. A mosquito becomes infected only if it bites an infected (সংক্রমিত) individual during the first three days of the victim’s illness. It then requires 8 to 11 days to incubate (বংশবিস্তার) the virus before the disease can be transmitted (স্থানান্তরিত) to another individual. Thereafter, the mosquito remains infected for life. The virus is injected into the skin of the victim through the saliva (লালা) of the mosquito. The spread of dengue is especially unpredictable (অপূর্বানুমানযোগ্য) because there are four serotypes of dengue virus. Infection with one type gives lifetime immunity from reinfection with that type of dengue. However, it does not prevent an individual from being infected by the other three types.
Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment
The symptoms are sudden onset, moderately high fever, excruciating joint pains, intense pain behind the eyes, the second rise in temperature after a brief remission, and particularly the type of rash and reduction in neutrophilic white blood cells. Dengue fever has no specific therapy. Therefore attention is given on relieving at the symptoms. Temporary preventive measures must be taken to segregate suspected (সন্দেহজনক) as well as diagnosed (রােগনির্ণয়কৃত) cases during their first three days of illness and by using mosquito screens and repellents to keep mosquitoes from biting more people.
Conclusion
Considering the hazard of this disease, it is necessary to control the spread of dengue fever. This requires (প্রয়ােজন হয়) the destruction of mosquitoes and their breeding (প্রজনন) places.
